Happy Tuesday y’all! As promised, I am posting my thoughts and feelings surrounding my switch to wordpress.org from wordpress.com. Let me start off by saying THANK YOU to all of you who have been patient with me through this intermittent posting nonsense, your support does not go unnoticed.
Before making the switch I watched a number of videos and read a plethora of articles that made it seem like a breeze…and I can honestly say that my experience was the opposite of what I expected. I made the transition from wordpress.com to wordpress.org and used SiteGround as my host site. The actual transfer of my content went well (i.e., downloading the zip file and uploading it), but the instructions and small details in order to have everything show up on the site were not as straightforward. We (David and I) thought we had done everything we needed to do and were constantly playing the hurry up and wait game only to find out that we had missed a small step along the way. Eventually we got the domain name transferred over and thought we were good to go, but of course we hit another snag. The lovely folks from SiteGround said it would take 24-48 hours for the site to propagate and show up…after about 4 days of zero progress we reached out to SiteGround and they said that we had not pointed the domain name properly and offered to help us with that step. Thank goodness! They told us that it could 2-24 hours before the site would show up…24 hours came and went and still nothing. At this point I was pretty frustrated, but I just tried to relax and I decided to give it another day. FINALLY after about 48 hours, the site popped up!
My theme was completely different, but all of my posts were there so I didn’t care! I had already planned on changing out my theme once the site had updated and everything was transferred over, so it was no biggie. The next day I went on ETSY and bought this theme and started to change the look of my site. There are still a few things that need to be tweaked; (the size of the header, my footer, my menu bar, etc.,) but for the most part, everything is up and running and I can finally post again, which makes me incredibly happy!
The part that’s still a little blurry to me is what this transition means for all of the followers/relationships I built through my original wordpress.com site. I can still get on WordPress and look through my reader and interact with all of the accounts that I follow (which I do daily), however none of my (new) posts will show up in the reader (at least that’s how I understand it) so all of my previous followers will not see any of my new content. Because I had already purchased the domain name through wordpress.com, my website name is still the same: http://southernlightsatlantanights.com/. However, because I changed the location of the domain name, none of my previous followers made me the move with me; you would think because it’s wordpress to wordpress that there would be an easy way to bring everyone over, but alas, there is not (at least not that I know of) :(. I’m hoping I can reach out to everyone and let them know that they need to re-subscribe in order to receive updates from me; I thoroughly enjoyed all of the followers and relationships that I was able to create through the wordpress.com platform and would hate to lose any of them!
Also, I mentioned (before making the transition) that I was going to do a giveaway to celebrate 100+ followers, and I still plan on doing that. I have all of the gifts packaged and ready to go but I wanted to make sure that all of my previous followers were informed of my transition and were able to go follow the new site before opening the giveaway; I just want everyone that’s interested to have a chance!
So I hope that all of you will join me for this next chapter in my (little) blogging career as I can’t wait to reconnect with you guys again, I’ve certainly missed you all!
